Former Liverpool defender Jose Enrique has doubled down on his claim that the club’s owners are to blame for Jurgen Klopp’s departure.

The German boss sensationally announced last week that he will be leaving the club at the end of the season, bringing an end to a glittering nine-year spell on Merseyside.

Enrique, who played under Klopp when he arrived from Dortmund during the 2015-16 campaign, took to social media after the announcement to share his belief that his former boss was simply ‘tired’ of the club’s American owners FSG.

Klopp then fired back at the former left-back claiming that he’s wrong, but Enrique has continued to insist FSG played a role as they didn’t back the manager enough in the transfer market.

The 38-year-old said: ‘I think there are many reasons why he’s leaving, but they are reasons that we will probably never find out,’ Enrique told Grosvenor Sport.

‘Even if he doesn’t agree with me, I still think and believe the owners have a lot to do with it – you can’t renew your contract and suddenly leave the club, it doesn’t make any sense. There has to be more to it.

‘It has to be something with the owners, he must be tired of having to pull off miracles all the time. He always has to do so much more than Manchester City and even Arsenal now to get what he wants in the transfer window.

I don’t think he’s just tired generally, why would you renew your contract a few months ago if you’re tired? It doesn’t make sense.’

After Enrique first made the claim, Klopp responded by saying: ‘I saw Jose Enrique, who I like a lot, say it is about FSG. ‘I can tell you, absolutely, FSG has nothing to do with it.’

Fenway Sports Group have come in for criticism from Liverpool fans during Klopp’s tenure amid the vast sums that have been spent by some of their Premier League rivals.

Animosity towards the owners arguably reached its height during the debacle that followed the unsuccessful formation of the European Super League in April 2021. It was revealed that FSG were not only a participant but a key player in the formation of the breakaway league.

However, the Reds’ owners have nonetheless presided over the most successful period in a generation at the club and appointed Klopp back in 2015.
